Sam Perry explains how a sail training trip led to a career in the sailing industry.

Sam Perry
At the age of 14, Sam and his brother went to Denmark and Norway as part of a Tall Ships Race with the Rona Sailing Project, an ASTO member organisation.
“The experience was pivotal for both of us, providing direction and inspiration for our lives and future careers. Through the project we were fortunate to take part in the Tall Ships race, contribute to vessel refits and develop a wide range of practical and interpersonal skills.”
This experience was life-changing for Sam, allowing him to discover a career in sailing and giving him the motivation to complete his RYA sailing qualifications.
“I knew I wanted to become involved in training. This led me to pursue my cruising instructor qualifications. I’ve genuinely enjoyed every stage of my training career and it’s taught me more about people, communication and personal development than any other role could have offered.”
Sam now works full-time helping to deliver training for the next generation of seafarers.
“Through my work at UKSA [another ASTO member organisation], I’ve had the privilege of working alongside many outstanding instructors who began their journeys through ASTO organisations.
Having experienced the life-changing impact of sail training, I wholeheartedly endorse its effectiveness as a powerful mechanism for positive change in young people’s lives.
I’m sincerely grateful for the support that shaped my path and hope to create similar opportunities for others.”
