Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about residential adventures at sea. If you still have any questions, feel free to get in touch.

Do participants need to be able to swim?

No. Sailing trips take place on large yachts. Participants will be provided with all the necessary safety equipment.

Is previous sailing experience required?

Absolutely not. Everyone is welcome and the professional crew will be on board all all times to explain what needs to be done. These are adventure sailing trips so participants are expected to get stuck in and help with the sailing, not just to be a passenger.

Is it safe?

Yes. All ASTO member organisations and their vessels operate under strict safety regulations. The staff are highly trained to ensure young people feel safe but still experience a genuinely challenging and fun adventure.

What equipment do participants need to take?

Before each trip, a detailed kit list will be provided. All specialist sailing equipment and safety items will be provided, participants will only need to take their own personal items.

Are dietary requirements or other special needs catered for?

Yes, trips cater for a range of requirements, but please ensure you discuss this with the organisation at the time of booking.
