Our Small Ships Races are youth‑focused events, open to all sail training vessels under 24 metres in length, where at least 50% of the crew are under the age of 25.

First run in 2002 with a race from Weymouth to St Malo, the Small Ships Races have become a longstanding and much‑loved feature of the ASTO calendar. Over the years, host ports have included Ipswich, Delfzijl, Glasgow, Greenock, Belfast, Cowes, Torquay, St Peter Port, London, Portland and Dartmouth, each offering a unique backdrop and warm welcome to participating crews.

While these events are described as races — and there is certainly keen competition on the water — the true focus lies beyond the finish line. The Small Ships Races aim to bring together a diverse range of sail training vessels, giving young people the opportunity to test their skills, work as a team, form lasting friendships and rise to the challenge of sailing these exciting ships.

All ASTO races use the Tall Ships Races racing rules, ensuring fairness, consistency and a shared spirit of seamanship.

ASTO runs an annual Small Ships Race based in Cowes, alongside a longer offshore passage race held every few years, offering crews a rewarding mix of competitive racing and extended sea experience.
