Spring 2026 Edition
This Spring 2026 edition is our first review of the impact of the UK Sail Training Sector. Our 30 members are independent organisations, with their own vessels, programmes and communities.
Through this review we share participant experiences, quotes and case studies which demonstrate the real, human impact that residential adventures at sea provide.

Theory of Change
Genuine challenge, real responsibility and a shared community create opportunities for personal development. Our Theory of Change explores how the voyage environment, supported by experienced staff and opportunities for reflection, can help people discover what they can do.

“For so many young, disadvantaged and disabled people, sail training has given them an opportunity to experience something very different. A sail training voyage is not just an enrichment activity. It can be a profound experience and a step-change for their lives, boosting wellbeing and their through-life outcomes.
This excellent review provides more context and evidence and I commend it to you all.”
Sir Jeremy Kyd, President - ASTO

“I am very proud of this first impact review from ASTO and delighted to see so many examples of young, disadvantaged and disabled people whose lives have been transformed through their participation in an adventure at sea with one of our member organisations.
Our aim is to continue to gather and present evidence to both promote awareness of the significant impact of sail training and encourage recognition of the importance of inclusive opportunities beyond the classroom in preparing our young people for life ahead.”
Kerry McMillan, Chief Executive - ASTO
If you commission or fund opportunities for young people, talk to ASTO about supporting skills development through the sector.
