Third Hand – Blue Mermaid, 2027 sailing season
Job description:
To work alongside Skipper and Mate in the delivery of sail training voyages aboard the engineless sailing barge Blue Mermaid
The role includes but is not limited to;
Supervision and ensuring safety onboard during sailing activities
Supervising and supporting domestic tasks including food prep carried out by the young people or group leaders
Assisting in the development and support of the young people onboard both in sailing and pastoral terms
Assisting the delivery of ship’s routine
Being a team player, building confidence and trust in the young people and helping them to maximise their potential
Key skills and experience:
A knowledge of or empathy with the challenges facing young people, particularly those from areas of financial and social deprivation
A knowledge of or empathy for young people with special educational needs
Strong team player with self-starting capabilities able to operate within a small team in a dynamic and demanding environment
Enthusiasm and can-do approach to working with young people
DBS check or a willingness to complete one
Desirable skills:
Barge or large vessel experience useful but not essential
Youth work or teaching background
Initially this role is a self employed role for the 2027 sailing season with a view to advancement subject to performance.
