ASTO’s annual Cowes Small Ships Race is normally held over the first weekend in October each year. For the first time in the event’s history, the race which brings together a diverse fleet of sailing vessels and their enthusiastic crews, has had to be cancelled.

ASTO’s Chief Executive Kerry McMillan and Race Director James Stevens have been monitoring the developing weather systems over the last few days and, having taken professional meteorological advice, the difficult but necessary decision to cancel the event on Saturday has been taken.

The safety of all participants, volunteers and supporters is our highest priority, and the predicted conditions present unnecessary risks.

This year’s event was due to attract 20 boats from eight different member organisations bringing more than 250 young people to take part.

While we are all disappointed that the event will not go ahead as planned, we appreciate the understanding and continued support for ASTO and sail training from everyone involved.

We look forward to welcoming you all to Cowes for the 2026 race event.
